The best fudge in Fredericksburg

I recently drove into downtown Fredericksburg to take pictures for a project I’m working on. I didn’t spend much time there but my attention was drawn by a shop across the street from the Fredericksburg Visitor Center. It’s called Olde Time Lollipops Candy and Fudge Factory and you absolutely have to check it out.

At first glance, it seems like any “olde” candy store but this is not the case. I was surprised to find a wide selection of treats and candy bars I’ve never heard of including the “Sky Bar” and “Oh Henry!” I was greeted by a gentleman behind a counter filled with yummy, delicious looking fudges. He then spoke words that every chocolate lover wishes to hear, “Would you like to sample some fudge?” Now, there is really no reason to refuse such an offer, the answer is always, “Yes.” I tried the “Chocolate Raspberry Swirl” and was highly impressed. I knew I was buying fudge that day, but what flavors, and how much? I called home to see if anyone wanted anything in particular, leading me to grab a few candy bars you don’t find in a normal convenience store. The fudge itself is $11.99 a pound and, the gentleman added a half pound for free! That’s a pound and a half of fudge for $12, well worth it when you consider that a) that’s a hefty amount of fudge, b) they let you pick which flavors and how much of each, and c) you’re supporting a local business with home-made product. I chose a quarter pound of 6 flavors: rocky road, chocolate-raspberry swirl, chocolate-pecan, chocolate-peanut butter, mochaccino, and cookies-and-cream. Apparently, they are prepared to make any type of flavor you can imagine, with 14 base flavors (chocolate, chocolate walnut, chocolate peanut butter, amaretto chocolate swirl, mint chocolate swirl, vanilla chocolate swirl, orange cream, cookies and cream, peanut butter, maple walnut, mochaccino, penuche, butter pecan, and rocky road) available daily. They’ve also told me that they make holiday flavors as well, including pumpkin pie, cranberry, and egg nog!

Over the last few days I’ve been snacking on one or two small pieces of fudge at a time. I want to eat more, but I don’t dare. It is something to be savored, not wolfed down like some candy lends itself towards. You take small bites and enjoy the taste and creamy texture as it melts on your tongue. I find that I don’t chew it, it seems wasteful as it is very soft and melts quickly. Each of the flavors I tried are delicious and honed to perfection. The flavors and the sweetness are not overpowering, but just right. It’s like a wonderful chocolate dream!

I highly recommend checking this place out if you’re in or near downtown Fredericksburg and even if you’re not. Its perfect for the chocolate lover in your family, for yourself, and would also make an excellent gift. I’d like to try their assortment of lollipops next and probably some of the caramel. I’m definitely planning a trip back when my current supply of fudge runs out!
